In “ Flexion of the Lumbar Spine Will Kill You! ” Z Health Master Trainer Mike T Nelson tackles the question of whether we should be working for Lumbar mobility, when our Lumbar is supposed to be a stabilizing force. In what might be his most profound moment he asks:

So maybe our end result is more muscle “stiffness” but we need to TRAIN MOBILITY to get there?

That was my whole point of the article when I wrote it.  We NEED to get MOBILITY FIRST before we can have good coordination. (stability)

I think this is is a BRILLIANT testament towards the need we have to understand what our muscles are for before trying to develop them. The point is that our muscles serve to move our bones . If the bones don’t move the muscles atrophy. So for the context of this particular debate, if we want to strengthen our lower back muscles to stabilize us the way they should, we NEED to move the joints that those muscles control! For the larger context just in maintaining our health and building our strength, we see that the more ways we can move the more our bodies can grow and get stronger.
