Peter Dean writes a bit on the matter at “ Understanding Chronic Back Pain “, and although his perspective is largely geared towards the process of carefully selecting the right professional for treatment, there is one point he makes that is vital to any efforts by those inclined to help themselves:
Although many people are aware of the fact that not doing enough exercise can result in several health issues including back pains, those same people are not always aware that you can strain your back by actually trying to do too much exercise too quickly.
This reinforces the point stressed in my post on flexibility and coordination of the lumbar spine, which is basically the emphasis on BALANCE. It’s all important in all things, but perhaps none so much as the development and maintenance of a healthy body. Too much of a good thing can spoil, so it’s key to always remember our ultimate goal of improvement and make sure we aren’t sabotaging ourselves with laziness or overeagerness, but rather are taking manageable steps in the right direction.
